Field TripsField Trip: Saw-wet Owl Banding

Friday, October 26, 2018
6 p.m. – midnight
Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, Rockton, IL
Leader: Mary Blackmore, 815-938-3204

Please register by October 22nd. Call Mary Blackmore at 815-938-3204 to register.

While we occupy the southern edge of the diminutive Saw-whet Owl’s breeding range, they are seldom observed in the summer. They become much more numerous in our area during fall migration as northerly birds head to the southern U.S. It is during this time that Saw-whet Owl banding occurs at Sand Bluff, with the birds being drawn to the nets by an audio-lure.

Join us for this exciting evening as we first observe and learn about species caught on the last daylight net run, and then immerse ourselves in all things Saw-whet, including net runs. Of course a captured owl cannot be guaranteed, but we have high hopes! Dress for the weather and mosquitoes. Bring insect repellant and a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.

This trip is limited to 20 people, with a registration deadline of October 22. To register call Mary at the above number. The banding station requests that any children who participate be a least 10 years old due to the lateness of the hour. Also because of the late hour, carpool drivers already have been secured.

Carpool from the east Staples lot in Freeport at 6 p.m. sharp.

Field TripsField Trip: Bedrock Geology of NW Illinois

Sunday, October 28, 2018
12:15 – 5 p.m.
Leader: Steve Simpson
Trip Coordinator: Laura Dufford, 815-947-2720, lauradufford@gmail.com

On this trip, retired HCC Geology Instructor Steve Simpson, will show us three rock layers that are exposed in our part of the state: The St. Peter Sandstone, the Platteville Dolostone, and the Galena Dolostone. We’ll be traveling back in time, but will also be able to experience the lovely landscapes of NW Illinois, beginning with Castle Rock State Park.

We’ll start at the Castle Rock Scenic overlook, located along the Rock River about a mile south of the main Park entrance on U.S. 2. You have the option of carpooling from the Staples parking lot or meeting at the park at 1:00. If you have not been there before, the view from the overlook at the Park is worth the trip! We will then travel to a quarry near the Elkhorn Creek preserve to look at the Platteville Dolostone and will finish near Freeport between 4 and 5:00.

Carpool from the Staples Parking lot at 12:15 or meet at Castle Rock State Park
at 1:00. Please confirm your attendance by contacting Laura Dufford.
