Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve, Forreston, IL (SE corner of West Grove and Freeport Rds)

We’ll hope for clear skies for viewing this annual meteor shower. We’ll take a short walk to see what’s in bloom at 7:30 p.m. The campfire will follow at 8:00. S’mores will be provided.

Sorry, but no ATV transportation will be available for this campfire. Bring a lawn chair, insect repellent, flashlight and water.

The preserve is located about 3 miles southwest of Forreston in the southeast corner of West Grove and Freeport Rds., with parking off of West Grove Rd. If the weather is questionable call Mary before 6:30 at 815-938-3204.

Perseids Campfire at our Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve. While the full moon will add a challenge to observing this annual meteor shower, it should be a beautiful evening. We’ll have a brief prairie walk at 7:30 p.m., followed by the campfire at 8 p.m. S’mores will be provided.

Bring a lawn chair, flashlight and water. The preserve is located about 3 miles southwest of Forreston in the southeast corner of West Grove and Freeport Rds., with parking off of West Grove Rd. If the weather is questionable call Mary at 815-938-3204.

Guest speaker Dan Williams of SurviveOutdoors.com, will present on a variety of topics for both medical and non-medical safety in the outdoors. How can you identify plants to avoid and what can you do if you touch the wrong leaf? How can you stay safe around animals you might encounter and keep them safe as well? How do you remove a fishhook? How to handle ticks and their illnesses. Williams, an outdoor enthusiast and medical practitioner for over 40 years, will address these topics and more. This program is for anyone looking to stay safe and confident in the outdoors. Meet in the shelter/parking area of the Newell Tract (the part of Oakdale on the west side of Crane’s Grove Rd.)

Co-hosted by the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society and the Northwest Illinois Forestry Association, in Partnership with RAMP.

Inspired by Birdability.org, NIAS and NIFA are committed to ensuring that the outdoors are welcoming, inclusive, and safe to everyone! Ken Beach, NIFA President, will be leading the group on a beginning tree identification outing using the 1/3-mile hard-packed accessible trail at Oakdale Nature Preserve. Ken will share tree characteristics to help participants identify the many different tree species in our area. Audubon members will help identify birds as well! Everyone is welcome! No previous experience necessary!
Accessible parking, benches, and bathrooms are available at the preserve. There will be signage with “Audubon Event” for directions. If you have any questions about the preserve and/or accommodation requests, please call the number above or email nwilaudubon@gmail.com.

Join us at the Jane Addamsland Foundation Butterfly Farm for an afternoon with the monarch butterflies. Ruth Little has been banding monarch butterflies for many years and will be available to show the group how the banding is done and tell us how the data from banding is utilized for monitoring. Philip and Ann Swalve who reside at the Butterfly Farm will talk about the plants that attract butterflies to the 83 acre farm. Come enjoy an afternoon at the Butterfly Farm.
If you would like to help with catching the butterflies, you are welcome to bring your own net. If you do not have a net, one can be provided.
The Butterfly Farm is located at 10405 N. Bellview Road in Orangeville with parking along the driveway available. Alternatively, if you want to add to the adventure you can ride your bike up the Jane Addams trail until you see the sign along the trail pointing to the Butterfly Farm. If the weather is questionable, call or text Teresa.
