The origin of the insect order Odonata dates back over 300 million years to a time when dragonflies with two and a half foot wingspans ruled the air. Today these successful aquatic insects represent a diverse group of animals with a complex life cycle. The 100 plus species known from Illinois can be excellent wetland indicators and are truly fascinating to observe. Experience an image intensive, up close and personal presentation of this intriguing, and visually splendid, group of insects presented by Marla Garrison of McHenry County College.

February 13, 2013 — Northwest Illinois Audubon 32nd Annual Banquet and Program on Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The movie The Big Year hit the box office in 2011. Sanford Komito, played by Owen Wilson in The Big Year, actually had his big year in 1998 when he spotted 748 birds from Jan. 1 – Dec. 31. This is the highest number of bird species spotted by any birder in one year. Our banquet program will feature Sanford Komito, who will talk about the history of the American Birding Association’s Big Year and share pictures of the highlights of his Big Year. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Sanford questions about his birding experiences.

November 1, 2012 — Northwest Illinois Audubon Society Accepts Gift of Land

Northwest Illinois Audubon Society is pleased to announce the acceptance of a generous gift of land from Mrs. Joanne Styles. The nearly 50 acres of land located at the headwaters of Silver Creek two miles south of the town of Leaf River will be maintained as a bird sanctuary and will be used to educate people of all ages about nature.

October 12, 2009 — ‘350!’ – Get in the Picture to Save the Planet

On Saturday October 24, concerned citizens from Northwest Illinois are invited to gather at Highland Community College in Freeport to be part of a world-wide effort to save the planet. The theme of the gathering, locally co-sponsored by the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society and the Highland Environmental Awareness Club, is ‘350!’

August 20, 2009 — Whooo’ Are These Owls?

Mark Spreyer, a Midwestern expert on owls, will present the program at the September meeting of the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society on Tuesday evening September 1 at Oakdale. This opportunity for a face-to-face visit with our hooting friends will be certain to amaze you and entertain your family.

August 17, 2009 — A Butterfly Festival!

On Saturday afternoon, August 29, the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will sponsor a ‘Butterfly Festival’ at its Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve south and east of Freeport. The public is welcome – especially families who are looking for a fun and educational event in the out-of-doors.

April 20, 2009 — Local Count of Sandhill Cranes Hits Record High

A record high number of Sandhill Cranes was recorded in Stephenson County on Saturday, April 18 when 28 members of the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society participated in the 34th Annual Midwest Crane Count. Included in the count of 31 cranes were 7 nesting pairs.

March 31, 2009 — Audubon Banquet Open to All — Even Hummingbirds

The 28th annual banquet of the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will be held Wednesday, April 15 at 6pm at Embury United Methodist Church in Freeport.

“Hummingbirds and How to Attract Them” will be the topic of the program which begins at 7pm. Both the banquet and the program are open to the public.

Local citizens will be able to save money on their electric bills thanks to recent gifts to the Freeport Public and Highland Community College libraries. The devices, called ‘Kill-a-Watt meters,’ were distributed to the libraries by students in the Aquin and Freeport High School Student Servant Leadership programs …
